The Madness is Here

There are several times of year that feel magical. Late fall football on Saturdays and Sundays, opening day of baseball (not this
year), and MARCH MADNESS. This is a time where we create 37 brackets, read a thousand articles, and if you are a gambler sweat out that big upset. We all want to make the perfect bracket to lay claim to Warren Buffets 1 Billion dollar reward.
Lets take a look at this past weekend where the 1,2,3,4,5,6, and 9 lost. Over half of the teams that lost this weekend lost to unranked teams and only one of the games were top 10 matchups (Baylor v. KU.) This really got me thinking that March Madness is going to be exactly that. MADNESS. This was definitely one of the craziest weekends of college basketball ever.
Looking at the statistics that people much smarter than I am, have created some crazy metrics on how to pick the winners of each game and are normally pretty accurate (kenpom.) Picking purely off of statistics and analytics can be quite boring sometimes though. If you went strictly off of analytics you never would have guessed UMCB beat UVA back in 2018, or Florida Gulf Coast taking down Georgetown and San Diego State to become the first 15 seed to make it to the Sweet Sixteen in 2013. It would be crazy though to not look at some of the analytics such as 5 seed only beating a 12 seed 64% of the time which seems high but, it's actually a 20% drop off from the 4 seed.
